Pluto’s haze layer shows its blue colour in this image. The high-altitude haze is thought to be similar in nature to that seen at Saturn’s moon Titan. The source of both hazes likely involves sunlight-driven chemical reactions of nitrogen and methane, leading to relatively small, soot-like particles (called tholins) that grow as they settle toward the surface 



The discovery of red water ice has also excited astronomers, as it adds to the theory that Pluto has a liquid sea under its surface that could host life. Pictured is one of the first high-resolution colour images of the dwarf planet, released by Nasa last month
